Respawn, a critically acclaimed game development studio acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017, developed the Ping System in its battle royale game, Apex Legends, which enables players within the same team to communicate with one another without having to use voice chat. This feature not only provides an alternative for players who wish to avoid potentially unwanted chat, it also provides an accessibility feature for players who are unable to speak easily. In addition, Electronic Arts has granted game developers free access to several accessibility-related tech patents, including the Ping System system, through its Patent Pledge.
